Your First Love

My Pastor pointed this out last night:

At the conclusion to his letter to the Ephesian church, Paul wrote:

Peace to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all of those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love. (Eph 6.23-24 NET)

Paul wrote the church at Ephesus and admonished them to love Christ with an undying love. If you compare this note of encouragement to the note of reality that was written by John about the Ephesian church just a few decades letter, you find the sad conclusion to this matter:

But I have this against you: You have departed from your first love! Therefore, remember from what high state you have fallen and repent! Do the deeds you did at the first; if not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place – that is, if you do not repent. (Rev 2.4-5 NET)

The Ephesian church had not heeded Paul’s words. They had left their first love, and Christ rebukes them for this. By application this message from Paul is for us as well. We need to love Christ with an undying love. What will be true of us in thirty or forty years? Will we have left our first love, or will our love for our Savior still be strong as it ever was?
